Evening shadows

Evening has arrived, creeping over as the sunlight retreats across the lake and forest beyond, faint rays of pink and golden light playing on the clouds as the light dims and finally the shadows become night,

I have sat and watched the Pelicans wheeling effortlessly over North Arm. I have listened to the screeching of the Galahs and the soft peeping of the Pied Oyster Catchers in the late afternoon glow. I have seen the children, their school day complete as they make their way homeward, school satchels over their shoulders, young and carefree, chatting to their friends as they meander along. Not so long ago, it seems, that was me. Heavy school bag over my shoulder, no computers then, just heavy books to carry to and fro, heat or rain, we walked.

I have felt the calming rhythm of my crochet, it’s easy count bringing peace as I sit in the afternoon’s waning light, a gentle breeze shifting the leaves of the gum  trees, their soft rustle adding their music to my peace.

I have sat with my cat on my lap, her faint purring adding to my sense of peace, her silky fur beneath my hands warm and comforting, the rhythm of her breathing keeping time with my crochet.

The day has been partly rest and partly work, the way a good day should be. An afternoon coffee with my husband, easy conversation as we sit together, the many shared experiences of our life bonding us in eternal peace, love and acceptance. A silence that is comfortable, shared in peaceful quiet, no words being necessary as we silently understand each other.  The years roll by, we don’t know how many more we may share together, but we are determined to make the most of being together whether a short or longer time. Blessed by God, we are one.

I am blessed beyond measure, I am loved.
