In 1956, IBM introduced the 305 RAMAC, a groundbreaking computer that featured the world’s first commercial hard disk drive. This massive piece of equipment, roughly the size of a refrigerator and weighing over a ton, could store an impressive 5 megabytes of data. At a time when data storage was limited to punched cards and magnetic tape, this innovation marked a major leap forward in computing technology.

The 5MB hard drive in the IBM 305 RAMAC allowed data to be accessed much more quickly and efficiently than previous methods. It fundamentally changed how businesses managed information, enabling faster transactions, better data organization, and greater reliability.
