The Lake

The lake was still, in the evening light
A moment of peace, serene and bright
I tossed a pebble, small and new
And watched it vanish into the blue.

But rings of water, ever wide,
Each touching edge, on every side,
Began to spread across the sheen,
A consequence, though yet unseen.

A harsh word spoken designed to tease
Can stir such waves, that know no ease,
A careless deed, a selfish aim,
And bring forth sorrow, grief, and shame.

A helping hand, a gentle touch,
Can lighten the heart, and mean so much,
A kindness offered with intention clear
Will banish darkness, doubt, and fear.

So let us choose with thoughtful care,
each word, each action we prepare,
For every ripple throughout each day
Will surely find its destined way.
